Here we go!

Portland Mornings

This morning, I woke up to fog-covered West Hills, grey skies, and cool air. For me, this time of year is a nice break from the constantly high temperatures, and a nice transition time before the long rainy season begins. I feel just a bit more relaxed, a bit more at-ease than I do most of the summer.

This morning, there were people out jogging, and getting to work or wherever else they were going.

There was also crew team practice on the river, coaches (in motor boats) giving instructions with bullhorns to the teams rowing ahead of them :)

So, enjoy it while it lasts! Get out there and savor the cool (but still dry) breeze :)

We too in Colorado have finally had a break in the uncommonly-high summer temperatures.

It’s odd- now that it is full dark out at 5:30am when I head out to work, I’m actually seeing more people on the path jogging or walking with their dogs. Ironically- none of them have any lights, whereas the rare dog-jogger I met when the sun still lightened the sky a few weeks ago had not only lights for the people, but a lovely red light on the dog collar also.
The mornings are nearly chilly enough for me to need gloves, I’m excited to see what this winter will be like. It will be my second non-Florida winter, and also the second bicycle-commuting winter. It should be fun!

I’m not out quite that early (I’m just waking up around 5:30), but it has definitely been chilly the last few days here, and it’s stayed grey through the whole day yesterday and today.

I personally tend to find the summer a bit over-stimulating, so I’m looking forward to the slightly more gentle, coddling autumn :)

Hope your autumn and winter go well!

how do you deal with the long rainy season in Portland? I know here in Boston, the kinds of days where it’s a lot like the portland “rain” you’ll get soaked if you’re riding for more than a mile even in full gear… fortunately for us it’s only 7 or 8 days a month all year round (and riding in snow isn’t that bad)… but i think for you guys it can be almost every day of horizontal wetness in the winter.

The thing that has surprised me, being out in the rain all autumn/winter/spring, is that I very rarely get completely soaked. Maybe 3-5 times per year. Though we have close to the top number of rainy days per year for the U.S., we aren’t all that close to the top in terms of total rainfall.

So, that means that most of the time I’m not wearing any rain gear at all, because it’s just drizzly out, and I personally find it too much hassle if I’m just going to get slightly damp. I just wear clothes that work ok if they get a little wet (wool is great that way).

I do have a poncho that I just keep in my bag all autumn/winter/spring, that I throw on over whatever I’m wearing if it happens to be dumping rain when I leave to go somewhere, but that’s pretty much it.

Granted, I’m maybe more rain-tolerant than most (I notice a lot of people in full head-to-toe rain gear when it’s just drizzly out), and I don’t really ever have the need to be out in the rain more than 30 minutes, but so far, that system has worked out pretty well for me.
