      True story! :)

The dog one kind of bums me out. Dogs aren’t MADE to run on concrete/asphalt! I hope maximizing their “efficiency” was worth it… when their dog is lame a couple of years before it would have been if they had just taken the time to properly take care of it. :-/ Another thing that freaks me out… and BELIEVE ME, I want people to ride as much as possible!!!… are people who ride with their little kids in traffic. These people may or may not be doing that, but the other day I saw a guy with his kid in a Burly (sp?) on a busy road. Sorry to roll up with a storm cloud on your wonderful blog!

If it makes you feel better about the dog, they were going very slowly. He was basically walking it, just while rolling along on a bike. As you can see, no car traffic, so no problem.

In terms of riding with kids on the bike – the number one killer of children, and in fact of anyone under age 35 in the U.S., is automobile crashes and collisions. The vast majority of people dying in said crashes and collisions are the occupants of the cars. That suggests to me that anything a parent can do to minimize their child’s time inside a car is probably a good thing. Not to mention that, if people choose not to drive, that makes it inherently safer to not drive, as it is one less automobile to get hit by. We can’t effect change unless we make the change ourselves.

I generally trust most parents to be responsible with their kids, as I trust they care about them and would not put them in a situation where they felt their safety was at risk. The reality of the situation is, even in a situation which may be uncomfortable for a person on a bicycle, in comparative terms, it’s not often actually dangerous. In contrast, driving a car, which usually feels safe and comfortable, there is actually a high level of danger due to the speeds involved, and the complacency that is often encouraged by that feeling of safety and comfort.

And bikey moms all over the internet give Dave an “Honorary Parent” badge! Well said!

Thanks! I can wear it right next to my “I’d rather be smooching my crafty wife” button :D I hope it doesn’t promote conception, though… I think we’d rather stick with the cats (for ourselves) :)
