Unfortunately, right after the nice weather and cleanup job over the weekend, I was riding my bike to work on Monday, and starting at a light, when I went to pedal, the gears slipped, ground fairly hard, and after that, though all three gears still worked, there was kind of a grinding sound in 3rd gear, and a light rattling in 2nd.
So, I stopped by the shop after work, and it looks like the hub is going to need to be pulled apart, and my bike is in the shop until next Wednesday, as they were totally booked up until then.
So, for this week so far, I’ve been riding my wife’s WorkCycles Secret Service, since she doesn’t work 4 days of the week, and her work is 3 blocks away when she does work, plus there are grocery stores and other things in walking distance of our apartment, so her need for the bike is usually somewhat minimal. It’s been interesting and nice getting the opportunity to ride a different bike for a bit.
It can be a challenge riding a different bike that is equipped differently, but also sometimes it’s really nice, too. It turns out the big front basket is nice for carrying a small pizza or two:
I can still easily carry a bag of groceries, plus my work bag:
And I actually didn’t use my poncho this morning, when I might have on my own bike, because the big front basket blocks a lot of the rain that would normally hit my legs. However, I also didn’t take my camera this morning, as I didn’t have an enclosed pannier to put it in to keep it out of the rain.
Though my wife’s WorkCycles is a notably shorter bike (in length) than my own, it always surprises me how upright it is. You’re really sitting bolt upright. And it really gives your quadriceps a good workout, whereas my bike works your calves more. The bike is geared pretty low, and I have basically stayed in gears 6, 7 and 8 (out of 8) at all times. We eventually want to get the whole range of gears shifted up a bit, as my wife’s usage reflects basically the same pattern.
In any case, it’s been a nice change of scenery, and on Saturday, I’ll be getting a loaner bike from the shop, so I’ll have another bike to try out and ride until mine is ready to ride again. I don’t know what that one will be yet, but I’ll be sure to let you know :)
Hope things are well with you all!
