More Winter Weather

Snow!

Tuesday night after we had eaten dinner, put our pajamas on, re-arranged our bedroom, and were getting ready to tuck in for the night, we noticed it had started snowing!

We realized that snow is fleeting in Portland, so we decided to put our clothes back on, get bundled up, and go for a walk around the neighborhood.

Snow!

Snow!

Snow!

Snow!

Snow!

The bikes were cuddling up for warmth:

Snow!

Snow!

I even got an I Love You from my wife :)

Snow!

We had a really nice 20 minute leisurely walk around the neighborhood arm in arm, caught some snowflakes, chatted. People driving down the main streets were even driving at reasonable speeds (what I would consider a reasonable speed for clear conditions – one that feels manageable for people outside the cars), it was quiet and beautiful.

And, it turns out it was a good thing we went out, because Wednesday morning was a mess of slush and heavy rain.

Snow!

Snow!

It’s supposed to rain steadily for about a week, coupled with 40mph winds. Not exactly my ideal. But, for just a moment there, we had a touch of winter wonderland :)

love the snowy bikes and Patrina’s striped mittens!

I know, I love those mittens. And they have that string connecting them, that goes through your sleeves, so you can take them off and they just dangle from your arm :)

Right now I’m dreading going outside, as it’s dumping rain (I can hear it on the roof). I wish snow stuck around longer here….

“I wish snow stuck around longer here….”

Because  snow doesn’t stick around longer there.

Nope, I lived in Lithuania for a year, where there was snow from December through the end of March, and it never went above freezing all that time, and I really miss it. I’d much rather that than just barely above freezing, dark, cloudy, and rainy all winter.

While there is something to be said for rain removing itself, there is also something to be said for snow being dry. Perhaps in a couple of days when the rain starts I’ll change my tune.

I’m human. I reserve the right to kvetch about getting the weather I asked for.

    Beautiful photos.

I notice you leave the panniers on one of the bicycles at night. Also your lights. Is there no problem with thieves/vandals stealing stuff off of bikes in your neighborhood? If so, must be nice….

Well, the lights are all bolted on, so it would be at least as hard as stealing the seat, and not as lucrative (except that we have our seats secured with a piece of bike chain to the rear racks).

The panniers and the basket are strapped on pretty well, so it would take some reasonable effort to remove them, more than probably most people are willing to do sitting on an exposed street corner under a street light right in the middle of a residential area.

So far, we haven’t had any problems, and we’ve been storing the bikes outside for about a year now. It doesn’t even look like anyone has attempted to mess with them, really. Maybe Portland is just generally good in this way, I’ve also left stuff (not really valuable stuff) in my panniers for up to an hour or two while I’m out shopping or whatever, and I’ve never come back to them either being gone, or my bike looking like it had been looked through.
