Gardening Season

We recently got my wife a new basket to go on her new front rack:

This has already come in handy, as it’s gardening season, and the other day we went over to the Fred Meyer near us to get some flowers for the beds around our apartment.

24

We met up after I came back from work and rode over together.

This guy was just coming from that direction with these huge baskets on his bike, and gave us a peace sign a second after I took the photo:

We made it there in the usual two or three minutes, went in and loaded up a good cart of plants, a hanging basket, and stuff for dinner that night, and then headed out.

Next step, packing them for the ride home. The front basket really made it easy. Almost all of them fit in the basket side-by-side.

The last few went in my pannier bags along with the groceries for dinner, and the hanging basket went upside-down on my back rack, secured with a couple of short bungee cords.

And, off we go, easy peasy.

Flowers for the Garden

Any of you enjoying planting and caring for a garden this year?

That  front rack seems pretty handy… I always get surprised how much I manage to load on my bike :)

Hi! Nice to see you over here :)

Yeah, the front rack has been wonderful, it really helps to be able to put some weight in the basket without it effecting the steering as much. It is amazing how much you can carry on a bike, we have no problem doing all of our normal errands.

Dave, the bike looks like you could throw it out of an airplane and then pick it off the ground and continue riding.  I like the brake levers.  How much light do you get out of the front photon ejector?
During the weekdays I shop for groceries at a supermarket close to my workplace (during the lunch-hour) and then haul them home on my bike.  Where I live, the closest supermarket is 2 km away and it doesn’t have the best selection (OK, it’s a mini-supermarket).  The equivalent supermarket to the one close to my work is 12 km away as the nice bike ride goes (sometimes I bike there on a Saturday or Sunday).

What can I say, Raleigh made them well back in the day :) The light works great, and the bottle generator generates enough for a rear light as well (though we don’t currently have one hooked up).

We’re lucky, we have two grocery stores (one of them is a supermarket, with everything from clothes to a full garden center, to paint to food) within about a 5 minute ride from our apartment. Our favorite grocery store is about 3.2km away, but we don’t go that often anymore, because it’s so far away :D

I guess everything is relative, eh? Have I also mentioned, I ride a bike because I’m lazy? It’s certainly not because I’m athletically inclined :)

Dave, I can understand that.  Walking is so slow compared to biking and it takes more energy to cover the same distance.  Hey, I bet your fitness level is above OK.  Recently I climbed 17 flights of stairs to the 19th floor or a high-rise, and there was no huffing and puffing, no burning of legs; just my heart beat a little bit faster.  Biking pays off…
