Happy Birthday, John

Today would have been John Lennon’s 70th Birthday. While I’m not really the type of person to make a hero out of someone, I appreciate that he was someone who cared enough in life to try to make things better, to change things, and not just settle for what is, when what is hurts people. Here’s to remembering we can make a difference.

    ha! he's on a raleigh dl-1!

i remember the day he died. i was 11 and it made me cry. he had such an enormous influence on me as a kid. i used to buy the sheet music to all his songs and play them on the piano. i also remember the media referring to his murder as "assassination", which always seemed strange to me.

[i don't mean to turn the celebration of his birthday into a memorial of his death, it's just that that's what sticks in my mind the most].

I was only about a year old when he died, but I've since come to appreciate his music and his life. Nobody is perfect by any means, but at least a few people here and there feel that it is a worthwhile pursuit to fight for something they feel is important, and not just accept what is just because it's easier that way.

It is kind of weird that the media would refer to his murder as an assassination, since that term usually refers to some kind of elaborate plot or alterior social or political motive behind the murder. I suppose it's possible that there was something, he was pretty outspoken, and hardly popular with everyone in the U.S., who knows.

In any case, I'm glad he was here for the time he was.

I was 18 years old when he died. I remember the moment I heard the news. I was truly devestated and cried my eyes out. I grew up on the Beatles, I remember being a small girl and being in the car with my mom while singing 'Penny Lane' along with the radio.

    RIP John. Imagine….

looking forward the first Ciclovia in Portland (sorry, if off topic) LA just had a great CicLAvia on 10/10/10!!

@Anonymous: well, we actually had 5 cyclovia type events in Portland this year in different areas of the city, but we call them Sunday Parkways. They block off a street route to car traffic, and have entertainment and street vendors and such along the route, and the route usually connects to several parks along the way, where they have entertainment and events set up. Check out BikePortland.org for reports on them. Cheers!
