Relaxed and groovy

Yesterday started off gray and misty, with palpable moisture in the air.

Thankfully throughout the day, it burned off and turned into a gorgeous, sunny, cool afternoon and evening. To celebrate, I took the long way home, all the way along the waterfront on one side of the river, then all the way back on the other side, and stopped to take a few photos along the way.

This morning was another cool, cloudy ride in, and again we have some bright sun to finish off the day with. All-in-all, a good start to autumn.

I'm in Berkeley now, and the best part of cycling here? The SF Bay Trail and Bike Boulevards! I looove diverters where cars turn but I go right through! There's lots of bike infrastructure/ traffic calming on streets that aren't even bike boulevards too which is great. Bike corrals, bike bridge, and bike station? All very cool! I'm curious, can you or have you covered bike boulevards on this site? It would be cool if ya did.

Your trip to amsterdam looked fantastic and I enjoyed your post about 'package deal'.

Great pictures, Dave. I love it when a grey day ends out good! The situation in London is getting better all the time with more cyclists on the roads this last summer than I've ever seen before. I just wish the city could keep up with demand for bike lanes and parking; then maybe we could start to have something like Amsterdam or Copenhagen on our hands!

@Severin: I haven't done a post specifically on bike boulevards, though I have mentioned some of the devices that get used on them to calm traffic. I could do a post on them soon though. I think they definitely serve a useful purpose, but they have their limitations and drawbacks as well.

Glad you enjoyed the posts about Amsterdam, we had a fantastic trip, and got us thinking a lot about public space and city design.

@Mark: Thanks! Portland is doing a decent job keeping up with bike parking demand, bike corrals are going in all over the place, but a big issue I think they're going to need to spend more time tackling soon is bike parking in residential areas. Basically, there isn't any, unless you live in a house with a garage or your apartment building/company provides some somewhere – but we often have people over who come by bike and then have nowhere to park, so they have to try to cram them in our apartment somewhere or find a small tree nearby or whatever. As far as bike lanes, I probably should write a whole post on more infrastructure stuff. Maybe I could combine that with bike boulevards :)

    Cheers!

Lovely, lovely photos of our fair city! I especially like the three in a row of different people on different bikes at the same spot–that last hairpin turn up the east bank at the Rose Quarter. If I'd seen you there taking pix, I'd have stopped and introduced myself.

The two of the bio-swale-like plantings are just beautiful! Great colors.

Yesterday and Today were the first cool days we've had here in Miami – perfect weather for cycling. My neighborhood is pretty much made for cycling: there are bike lanes on both sides of the street (the east end of state road 916) and the end of the street becomes bikes-only. And it merges with the local FIU campus and their bike path, so it's a perfect way for me to get to class. As for the rest of the city, bike lanes are starting to pop-up everywhere (at a slow but steady pace), which encourages people to use them. It's not as awesome as the Berkeley comment sounds but things are improving in the cycling scene around here.

Your photos are absolutely DIVINE! I moved from Portland to Longview, Wa about a year ago (still wondering why..ohhh why…) – so it does my heart good to see the wonderfully `weird' people of Portland out peddling. Yay!

We've got 1 bike lane here in the entire town. But, cycling here is growing in popularity & there is talk of adding more bike lanes. Bike blvds? Not in my lifetime. :o(

peddle on! thanks for the pics of home.
