15 Minutes

This morning when I arrived at work, I went in and grabbed a coffee and decided to just go sit outside, sip the coffee, enjoy the nice cool morning while it was still cool, and do a bit of people watching. In the 15 minutes or so that I was sitting there, here is what I saw.

Ooh! I saw that same person in the tiny shorts and the frilly pink top on my way to work this morning too. Very noticeable.

    It was a beautiful commute.

@Anne: Hah, that's awesome :) That guy came riding in from the left of where I was sitting, rode past me, looped around, then came back and headed out straight ahead of where I was sitting and back North along Moody Ave. It was definitely one of those "woah" moments :)

    Lost a bet maybe??!!

Such a nice sight – tons of bikes rather than cars! I consider myself lucky if I see more than 3 bikes between my house and work (approx. 6.5 miles). Not counting the university campus, of course. And I honestly don't think there are that many bikes in one place even on campus!

Great stuff! Portland is really getting somewhere… can't wait till percent of bike trips is up at 15 or 20% Right now it is 8% of trips are bike bike, right?

@Traci: this is a bit of an unusual sight in Portland having quite this many bikes in one place (hundreds parked together everyday), but I am feeling these days like everywhere I go I see people on bikes. The other day, we got held up on the Hawthorne bridge on the way home from work, as there was a barge coming up the river, and coming down off the bridge, there were about 3-4 cars on the road, and a huge swarm of bikes all across the road. It was a great feeling :)

@Walk Eagle Rock: well, one of the problems with the counts, is they only count "work commute" trips, and I kind of have a feeling we would get a higher percentage of trips by bike if they counted ALL trips – there are *a lot* of people out by bike in the evenings to go to dinner, drinks, movies, etc – a lot of people go to shows and special events by bike – and I have a feeling a lot of people who have longer work commutes but live close to much of the other stuff they do ride bikes for almost all trips *except* work (my wife being one example).

So yeah, we have 8% of work commutes by bike, but I think we're actually doing better than that overall. Of course, that's just my subjective feeling, but it seems like it.

    Cheers!
