No Doubt About It…

People in Portland love riding their bicycles. Now that we seem to have left the terrible, horrible, no good, awful spring behind us, it seems that people are out in even greater numbers than ever. On my daily rides, it seems like no matter where I am, I see people on bikes. A number of streets around town are seeing more bicycle traffic than car traffic, and on weekends, separated paths are teeming with people walking and biking.

Morning Parking

At my work, these rows of bike racks shown below were just added over the weekend, and this morning they were about half-full already. I might also add, this is a spot where bicycles were often locked to the railings on steps and ramps (which were clearly marked no bicycle parking), so I wonder if adding the racks was a strategic way to prevent that – promote proper behavior by making it easy.

They also added more racks in the area shown above, which has seen a couple other additions during this year.

New Parking

People out and about, just moving around by bicycle. What better way to enjoy such a beautiful city?

Cargo-go!

    I'm so happy to see so many Portlanders on bikes this week that I'm even forgiving all the fair weather bikers for hogging all the space on the bike racks! I used to have no trouble finding empty slots during the spring that wasn't. Good for the city for expanding the bike parking.
    Local businesses can call a city hotline to ask for racks to be installed but there may be a backlog of requests. I found this info on BikePortland.com.

    Wasn't it a great weekend for biking in Portland? I definitely avoided the multi-use paths, but riding on the streets was nice too.

    This is why I love Portland and want to live there! Ever since I visited a good friend of mine who moved out there, I've had a huge city crush on Portland. It helped that we used her bikes and rode all around the bike paths with her son in a bike trailer, taking in the sights, and hitting up a couple of farmers' markets and then parks. It reminded me so much of being in Europe. Way to go, Portlanders! :)

    @brett: yeah, a little extra parking inconvenience is well worth the masses of people out on bikes!

    @Anne: indeed :)

    @Simply Bike: It's a great place to live! Other than Europe, it's the only place I could envision myself living any period of time.
