Tweediness

We went on (most of) the First Annual Portland Tweed Ride this morning, and had a blast. Despite some hub issues, we made it through the ride until they were a few blocks from our apartment, and decided to duck out.

I have some photos of my own, but I seem to have misplaced my camera cable, so you’ll have to wait on those until Monday. In the meantime, here are some photos from flickr users shetha, william200549, Mega Monkey 9000, wittco.gmbh and bikeportland.

Update – here are a few of my pictures. I unfortunately didn’t get many, as my camera battery died after the stop at overlook park. Still, enjoy!

Update #2: Here’s a nice edited video from YouTube user allenink. Watch for Trina and I around 48 seconds and 55 seconds into the video:

Any idea on the number of riders? Impressive turnout and a wonderful array of bikes, and outfits!

Now Portland is defintely on my "bucket list"

Hey Aaron – estimates were in the 150+ people range. We were really surprised, actually, how many people showed up, and how diverse the crowd was, as you said.

Well, if you're ever coming to town, look us up, we can give you a quick bike-tour :)

nice! I love the small world of it all. I believe the woman with the blue townie Xtra ( Hau) was connected to me by my friend JJ to help me tell my bike shop how to configure the peapod seat on the townie for short people. In fact I brought a print out picture of her bike set up to the shop for installing. It's nice to see pics of people I have conversed with but never met!

  • Dottie

Great pictures! I look forward to seeing yours.

I'm surprised that Portland took so long to have a tweed ride, given its legendary enthusiasm for theme rides :)

  • portlandize.com

@MamaVee: it is fun making connections like that :)

@Dottie: Yeah, it does seem that we have a abnormal enthusiasm for organized rides, doesn't it? :)

All in all, I'd do the ride again, it was nice and calm, people were pretty respectful all around (both those in the ride, and those we crossed paths with), there were people hanging out of their house windows taking pictures, people at bus stops laughing and smiling and waving, people in cars stopping for us and waving as all 150+ of us rode by. Pretty smile-inducing.

Cool, everyone looks fantastic. I agree with Dottie, what took Portland so long to have a Tweed Ride? :P

  • Christa

Also, Santa Barbara has some wacky theme rides: http://www.sbbikemoves.com/. Last one was a cape theme.

  • portlandize.com

Heh, I like the French one. Are you allowed to drink a bottle of wine as you go along? :D I'd definitely go on *that* ride!

As far as the tweed ride goes, I wear a suit every now and then, and dress up a bit quite regularly, so I wouldn't think of organizing something like this really, it's not something unusual that needs an event for me – but I'm happy to go on it if someone else organizes it! :)

  • the freelancer’s fashionblog

    Great :D
I wonder if someone will ever throw a tweed ride over here…
(now that I think about it, I do know this one bike enthusiast who has a thing for tweed too and he'd be perfect for arranging such a thing…)

  • portlandize.com

@the freelancer's fashionblog: Then I expect to see photos this Spring! Hope it's not too much longer until you can get back on your bike :)

  • imaginarybicycle

Thanks for the posting the video especially. Everyone looks like they're having a wonderful time and you and your partner make a very dapper couple. I so so want to do this next year.

  • portlandize.com

It was a fun time, and the more the merrier. I'm sure we had enough turn out that they'll try to do it again. Come on up next year! :)

  • She Rides a Bike

I'd really like to organize one of these in my community but not getting much interest from the local bike org. They tend to focus on child-friendly activites but I want to do something just for adults with stops at the downtown pubs. I am not one for seeing childen at pubs. Anyway, it looks like great fun.

Tweed rides are the best! It's great to see yours and Trina's smiling faces again! Hope to ride with you guys soon somewhere in the world!

If you're ever up here again, be sure to let us know :) I'm afraid our discretionary funds for travel in the near future are being put towards a friend's wedding and a hopeful trip to Europe, but if we do ever make it down to SF, it'd be great to have a local guide :) Cheers!
