Batavus Old Dutch

Søren is in at Clever Cycles having a bit of a tune-up on the rear hub, so they loaned me a Batavus Old Dutch to use in the meantime. I had been interested to try one out, so I was happy to have the chance.

At first, I was surprised by how different the frame setup was. You sit higher on the Batavus, and the handlebars are much closer to your body. After riding it for a couple of days, I think I still prefer the frame setup of the Amsterdam, but the Batavus feels a little more solidly constructed. I would, however, be interested in getting some slightly narrower handlebars for Søren, more like the Batavus has.

Hopefully Søren will be done tomorrow, and I’ll be able to get in some good miles on my newly built wheel.

Happy hot, sunny weekend, all!

One of the things I like about my Socorro is that it has a very easily adjustable stem so I can bring my bars just a bit further away from me. After a life time of MTB’s it is hard to get comfortable that upright (at least for me). Every once in a while I’ll adjust the bars closer and higher. I always change them back to get just a bit of reach. You can give the American a dutch bike, but…. : )

I test rode both an Amsterdam and an Old Dutch at Clever Cycles, and was surprised that I slightly preferred the Amsterdam, mostly because of the smooth shifting Nexus hub and the better brakes. I liked the more upright OD position a little better. I wound up finding an Azor on craigslist, which is sort of the best of both worlds — nexus hub, more upright position.
